I am not usually a fan of retractable leashes. Most dogs aren't trained well enough to not be a nuisance on a lead like this, and many of the retractable leashes on the market are not sturdy enough for a dog like mine, who is strong and muscular. Our first dog, a calm, mellow Lab, broke the mechanism on a retractable leash, so I have been hesitant to try one with our current strong pit mix. This leash is much better than others I have seen and tried. First thing I noticed was that the package was heavy. Not uncomfortably so, but heavier than most others. It is sturdy and nicely made. The padded handle is comfortable to hold, and is large enough for my husband's big hands without being too big for me. The flat tape leash is nicer than the twisted rope of other retractables, and the reflective stitching is a nice touch. The mechanism works smoothly and quietly, without the clicking noises of other brands. The lock switch is placed in an easy to use spot on the handle. It does work a bit differently than some others, and took a few times to get used to. It's a subtle difference, and after just a few tries, it was easy. It locks well, and I don't think even the strongest puller would be able to unlock it.Overall, I probably will not use this leash on a daily basis, but I can certainly see using it on hikes when we want to give our dog some freedom, but still be able to reliably bring him back to us when we meet other people and dogs. Or in winter when I take him out for a potty break, so I can stay on the plowed street/sidewalk while he wanders off in the snow. A quality product. Definitely recommended.
