Have had three and the latest has worked perfectly for seven years in a moderate climate.
I've had three of these. The first was used in a house for five and a half years and was still working when we moved. The second was the wall mount version which worked great, but we were only in that house a year and a half.I currently have this exact one in medium. We've been in this house seven years and it's worked great all that time. Only a few months ago did the door start to tear and a couple of weeks ago it became unusable so we ripped it off and I'm looking for a replacement flap. We live in a moderate climate and the door is only open while someone is home and in the same room (we have to get the dogs in when they bark even a little bit because our neighbor is very sensitive to noise).When we first moved in, we had a rambunctious middle aged dog. We got an older but very overweight dog within a couple of weeks. She was barely able to fit through the door (but she forced herself) which put a lot of strain on the sides of the door. We then rescued a small elderly dog. All were able to use the door easily. Even the little dog could get in and out just fine. (He was about fifteen pounds.) Since then, we've had several elderly dogs and after all the dogs passed away, we got two very young dogs, one only 8 months old. Needless to say, the door gets quite a work out with the dogs wanting to be wherever something is happening so she comes in and out constantly.My point is that this door has been heavily used for over seven years and it's still in great shape except for the flap which has finally bitten the dust. We even used the plastic screws that came with it, which have held up beautifully. The metal panel that is used to close off the door, has bent a little because of how much we use it and how careless the kids are when they set it aside, but it still works fine. The spring in the locking mechanism still works great, too.I agree that the flap probably became less weatherproof over the years, but we live in a moderate climate (except for all the rain), Seattle, and we only have it open part of the day, and it hasn't been a problem that we've noticed in our bills. If you live in a harsher climate and this door is going from a heated area to the outside, then you probably want something with at least a double flap. But this has been perfect for our needs.

Dogs love it
Just what the dogs needed. Installed easily, works fine. The template for how big to make it is a little bit - we installed it as though our dogs were smaller (template said cut "here" and we cut it lower). The dogs run through without stopping and the smaller size reduces draft and flapping.

Great Value
Forget the plastic door units, this is the only way to go because the tail doesn't get trapped. I used two of these on outdoor shelters that I set up to be for the barn cats. I put them in coolers and used 1/2 of them for the one door and 1/2 of them for the other. I used the flap side for the escape door.
