Don't over-tighten the plastic screws!
We installed the medium-sized door about ten years ago during a house remodeling. This one goes from the kitchen to the garage, and we installed it in the wall, rather than the door. Because the wall is much thicker than a door, the included mounting screws were too short. No problem, however, because we simply used wood screws to secure each half of the dog door to the wall studs. We recently purchased (what I thought was) the identical dog door for installation between the garage and the back yard patio. The only apparent difference was that the new one was painted white whereas the original was bare aluminum. Since our kitchen walls are white, I assumed that I could simply install the new door in the kitchen for a better color match. However, the new door was slightly larger, and would not fit in the hole, so I just reinstalled the original aluminum-colored door in the kitchen. No biggie. Installation of the new (white) door in the garage/patio was simple, following the enclosed instructions and template for the cut-out. The two halves of the door are held together with a plastic screw, which goes through a flat nut. This device is designed in such a way that you can install it on doors of varying thicknesses, and then snip off the extra length of the plastic screw. Problem is, you've got to be careful not to over tighten the screw, because it will (and in my case, did, twice!) snap off. To be fair, the instructions caution you not to use a power screwdriver (which I did), but rather to hand tighten the screw so as not to break it. TAKE THIS INSTRUCTION SERIOUSLY. If you do happen to snap off the head of the screw, there's a simple work-around: just find a small nut that will thread onto the remains of the screw and try again. I see that some posts have been critical of the use of the plastic screw, but I think it's actually an ingenious device because the "extra" end of the screw can be snipped off with wire cutters so that it's flush against the frame. (A metal screw would require a hacksaw). I would suggest, however, that the manufacturer include an extra plastic screw -- or in my case, two -- in the (likely?) event that you'll snap off the head on your first try. By the way, Luna, our poodle mix rescue dog, loves it and learned to use it on her first try.

Love it. Although the slide to close it could have been made a little easier. :)

Consider the style of your door, before you buy!
I have installed two of these doors and I like the sturdy nature of the aluminum. I have installed six pet doors (3 Ideal and 3 PetSafe brands) over the last few years. The installation template is very easy to follow. You can install this with the (human) door upright but I prefer to remove the door and place it on sawhorses. Take time to be sure you get the height of the dog correct so you can also set the height of the door correctly. You will not get a do over.Again I like this door but it does not have the best function for every style of door. My install was the large size aluminum pet door for a sixty and forty pound dog, on two exterior doors. One door has a half window (nine panes) in the door with two inch blinds. The second door has a larger glass area (12 panes) with no blind. The first issue involves the space that is available above the pet door to slide in the pet door security cover. If you have a window blind on the door, the security cover will interfere, and you will need to raise the blind to create enough room to accommodate the height needed for the slide in cover. The tolerance of the aluminum groove for the slide in door cover is fairly tight which is a good thing for security, however I have to wrestle the blinds each time I want to slide in the cover to keep the dogs outside. I tried to open up the tolerance but even after I pried open the groove some; I still cannot tilt the cover (out) to a degree to not have the blinds in the way. This means you better have both hands free to install the cover. The second door does not have a blind and I was able to open up the tolerance enough so the slide in cover would not interfere with the trim molding around the door window glass, but it is still a snug fit and it could damage the trim molding over time. I cannot say that this will be the case for smaller size pet doors and this will not be an issue if you have a solid door. The second issue is the plastic screws. It is great for a simple installation but plan on replacing these with stainless steel screws once you establish the screw length.I like the doors and PetSafe has provided great customer service for this and other products so I will remain a customer. PetSafe also offers an Extreme Weather pet door that has a clip on security door. Good product, no slide in cover issues but you do have to kneel down and clip the door on with both hands. I would also recommend that you look into the Ideal Ruff Weather door. I had one of these on an identical door for years in a previous house. It is plastic but it is sunstantial as it is quite a bit thicker which helps the insulation properties and to overcome the issues I raise above. I think the only issue may from the dog's point of view. The yippy dogs will have to stride a little further or they may bottom out :-)
